UPMLA-Sponsored Postal Match for Individual Shooters
(2020-21)
The UPMLA sponsors a monthly postal muzzzleloading match for
individual shooters. The match helps participants to practice and
to refine their techniques and equipment, which supports the
UPMLA's goal of promoting skill and proficiency with muzzleloading
firearms.
(Note: This postal match is separate from and not a part of
the International club team postal muzzle loading matches that are
sponsored by the UPMLA from January through June.)
How the match works:
- Contact the individual listed below to enter the match.
There is a modest $20 entry fee that helps pay for postage
and printing of targets.
- The match runs for 12 months beginning in July 2020.
However, an individual may enter at any time with payment of
the entry fee.
- Membership in the UPMLA is not required to participate
in the match.
- Every month, each participant will receive two targets in
the mail.
- Targets should be shot and mailed back, postmarked on or
before the deadline stated with the instructions that accompany
the targets.
- If a participant cannot shoot during some month and does not
send in the targets, that's OK. There is no penalty and the
next month's targets will be sent as usual.
- The rules of the match are to be followed on the honor
system.
- Firearms should be traditional sidehammer or underhammer
rifles or smoothbores, either flintlocks or caplocks.
- Open sights only.
- Patched roundball only.
- Shooting position: Offhand only; upper arms may rest against
chest.
- Each month there will be supplied one target to be shot at a
distance of 25 yards, and another target at 50 yards.
- Course of fire will be furnished with each monthly set
of targets. Six shots will be required at each distance.
The best five shots will be scored. Individual shots are
evaluated based on the center of the ball.
- Returned targets should show evidence of six shots hitting
the paper. If you take six shots but fewer than six show on the
target paper, you may take additional shots until there are six
identifiable shots showing.
- If more than six identifiable shots show on the the paper,
then the highest scoring excess shots will be disregarded.
- The score report for each month will be sent along with
the next month's targets.
- Monthly results will be posted on the UPMLA website in the
News & Notes section. Here is a link to some recent scores:

The targets are likely to show some imagination and artistry
and may require some thought about where to place shots to obtain
a maximum score.

actual size: 8.5x11 inches
